ABOUT DAVID GATLEY

Dave Gatley is an independent photojournalist and member of MAI who has worked assignments literally around the world.  Based in the southwestern corner of the United States, his skills and reputation necessitate his travel all over the country and overseas for "hard-news" organizations, Corporate, US Military and other US Government Agencies.

MAI Photo News Agency: About David GatleyDave has been a professional photographer for over 35 years and the former Chief Photographer with the Los Angeles Times, working there some 18 years and then working as a freelance commercial / editorial photographer for over 17 years. Prior to the LA Times, Dave was a “techie” working 8 years as a senior Computer Programmer / Analyst with The RAND Corporation specializing in military logistics, weapon systems and large government databases.

Nationally and locally recognized as an award winning photojournalist, being nominated for the Pulitzer three times, he has served hundreds of international and domestic news magazines, newspapers and has been published in over three-dozen books. Currently he’s working as a  co-editor and photographer with Greg Mathieson on another military book and with NSW Publications, LLC, a sister company of MAI.

Few photographers working today have had the breadth of experience covering current events, natural or man made disasters marking cultural and historical milestones.  Few in his field have Dave’s technical background or the working experiences with corporate, governmental agencies and law enforcement in addition to  Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) and the Armed Forces.  He has brought Digital Photography and Digital Imaging Solutions consultation, design, direction and implementation to the Digital Archiving Project with the Zoological Society of San Diego and that of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) where he set up a News Photo Desk operation while working as Lead Photographer for FEMAs National Emergency Response Team (ERT-N).

Mr. Gatley’s assignments have taken him to nearly every state and over 30 countries numerous times.  To date, he has completed over six tours into the war-torn Middle East countries of Afghanistan, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan.  In addition, he’s had eight tours throughout Europe and Asia; South Korea, Japan, and Okinawa.

Some of his commercial and corporate clients include General Motors, General Dynamics, ITT, Lockheed, Motorola, Pacific Bell, Panasonic, Peregrine, SD Zoological Society (SD Zoo), numerous pharmaceutical companies, and many more. From events and functions, to annual reports, corporate chiefs to warehouse workers, he is a trusted member of the team, routinely entrusted to critical information and sensitive materials; such is unique with MAI.

His accomplishments have included Board & Vice President of both the Los Angeles & San Diego Chapters of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and President of the San Diego News Photographers.  Dave is available for lecturing and teaching Photojournalism as he has done at Point Loma Nazarine University in San Diego, and with Panasonic & Rainmaker Marketing as an instructor for their nationally advertised Digital Photo Academy.  Dave is available for all these services as well as photography assignments though MAI.
